Dr. John H. Ferguson was born in Milledgeville, Georgia October 1943, about three months after his parents moved to Milledgeville. His father was Dean at Georgia Military College (GMC) and his mother was a teacher at the Youth Development Center. He attended Baldwin County public schools K-7, then entered GMC for grades 8-12 and junior college.
He attended the University of Georgia before entering Emory University School of Dentistry. After graduating from dental school, he served as a U.S. Army Dental Corp Captain in Fort Polk, Louisiana, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and Vietnam, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. Following military service, he returned to Emory Dental School for a two year residency in Orthodontics.
In 1972 Dr. Ferguson moved back to Milledgeville to practice orthodontics. In l979 he opened a satellite office in Dublin, and in l987 opened his third office in nearby Sandersville. He is a member of the Central District Dental Society, The Georgia Dental Association, The American Dental Association, the Georgia Academy of Dental Practice, the Southern Association of Orthodontists, the Georgia Association of Orthodontists, and the American Association of Orthodontists.
Community activities include memberships in the Milledgeville Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce, Oconee Regional Medical Center Hospital Authority, GMC Alumni Association, GMC advisory Board to the Trustees, Milledgeville Rotary Club, and director of Branch Bank and Trust Company of Milledgeville. He has served in leadership positions of many of these organizations.
Milledgeville First Baptist Church has been an important part of his life. He has served as Deacon, Trustee, Sunday School teacher, choir member, and chaired several of the church committees. Awards he has received include Honorable Fellow as well as Life Member of the Georgia Dental Association, Meritorious Service Award from Emory Dental Alumni, Distinguished Alumni Award from GMC, Community Service Award of the Southern Association of Orthodontists, and Presidential Citation from the Georgia Dental Association in both 2001 and 2011.
He is also a member of the American and the International College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and is former President of the Georgia Board of Dentistry. He has served fifteen years as Board Chairman of the Georgia Dental Insurance Services.
He is married to his high school sweetheart, Janet Pennington Ferguson. They have one daughter, Emily May, now of Decatur, Georgia. She is a graduate of GMC prep school, Emory University, and Mercer Pharmacy School. She is a pharmacist in Atlanta. They have two grandchildren; Ellen is a junior at the University of Georgia and Merritt a freshman at Valdosta.
Dr. Ferguson enjoys reading, traveling and boating. He has visited 49 states and many foreign countries. He is pleased to serve with the Central State Hospital Local Redevelopment Authority. He realizes much can be achieved there to reuse the property for growth and development of Milledgeville and middle Georgia.
